The Role of the Troon Community Council

Community Councils are voluntary bodies which exist within a statutory framework and which have been granted statutory rights of consultation. The general purpose of the Troon Community Council is to ascertain, co-ordinate and express the wider views of the entire community within its boundaries. Community Councils will seek to represent and include all sections of their communities, regardless of age, gender, ability, ethnic origin, political or religious beliefs, or sexual orientation. They can complement the role of the local authority but are not part of local government.

New wheeled-sports zone set for Troon

Skateboarders, rollerbladers, BMX and scooter riders are set to benefit from a new facility in Troon.

The former paddling pool on the town’s esplanade will be turned into a purpose-built zone featuring ramps, bowls, ledges, and railings.

Many of the features are the inspiration of local school children, who were consulted on the design.

South Ayrshire Council has been looking for a suitable site to dedicate to wheelers for some time and the project became a reality thanks to developer contributions from Lynch Homes and Stewart Milne Homes.

The facility will be constructed by Bendcrete Ltd, who have built hundreds of skateparks across the UK and Ireland. They use sprayed concrete which means they can incorporate more flexible designs.

Councillor Bob Pollock, Economic Development Portfolio Holder for South Ayrshire Council said: “I’m sure this new facility will be very popular, and not only with locals. There has been interest in the wheeled zone from all across the west coast, so it will bring people into the town and help boost the local economy. Wheeled sports zones can be enjoyed by people of all ages, so it could also become a hub for the community. I would like to thank the Council’s project team for all their hard work, and Lynch Homes and Stewart Milne Homes for providing the funding.”

Arlene Gordon, a long-time supporter of the project said: “This is great news for our young people and their families, we so need something like this, and I hope it’s well utilised and also brings new people to the town.”

The Troon Urban Sports Kommunity (TUSK) who have been campaigning for a local facility said: “Fantastic!”

Work is set to begin on the wheeled-sports zone in February 2023, with completion expected 8-10 weeks later.
